Children in the Wilderness (CITW) South Africa’s long-standing relationship with Different.Org could not be more appreciated than right now, as the fundraising organisation rolls out another impactful campaign for its Makuleke and Simson partner communities in Limpopo Province.
In the recent past, Different.Org’s indefatigable Ryan Sobey has driven projects to raise funds for…
- A complete revamp of the Vululwazi School library in the KwaMpukane community of northern KwaZulu-Natal in 2014
- A fundraising campaign to train 20 Eco-Mentors, impacting 300 learners directly and another 3 000 indirectly
- A project to provide 10 households in the KwaMpukane community with an iHarvey, a safe electrical generator which powers three lights and cell phones in 2018
- The refurbishment and repair of a classroom at Makuleke Primary School in 2018
We work with five primary schools in Makuleke and Simson villages. Their combined Eco-Club membership boasts 180 children, while the total number of learners in these partner schools is estimated at 2 000, and they naturally also, directly and indirectly, benefit from our work, and that of our partners and donors.
Kenneth Makhubele is just one of the many graduates of the Makuleke CITW programme. He shares his inspiring story with us: “My name is Kenneth ‘Jack Black’ Makhubele and I am 28 years old. I was born and raised in Makuleke village, which is located on the north-western boundary of the Kruger National Park in Limpopo Province, South Africa.
“I work as a tracker and nature guide on the Pafuri Concession in Kruger National Park. I joined CITW in 2005 as an Eco-Club member at Joas Phahlela Primary School, because I grew up with a passion for nature – and I have not looked back since.”
The funds raised will go towards the provision of PPE, to help mitigate the risk and impact of COVID-19 on our partner community schools, in order to set up, operate and maintain hand-wash stations in the schools.
Funds will also be used to build on the skills and knowledge of our Community Programme Co-ordinators, Eco-Mentors and teachers, who will be able to run our school-based activities without compromising the health and life of our beneficiaries
