Children in the Wilderness South Africa has started a new fund-raising activity with our partners, Different.org, to raise funds to train 20 Eco-Mentors in South Africa, impacting 300 learners directly and another 3000 indirectly. The Children in the Wilderness programme is based on a foundation of Eco-Clubs. The focus of the Eco-Clubs is on teaching children about their environment and the conservation and sustainability thereof. In the process, they also learn and practice many life skills such as leadership skills, teamwork, planning, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
Children in the Wilderness have identified the need to train more mentors who will directly and indirectly reach more children than those attending the schools we work with. The Eco-Mentor Training and Development Project aims to develop the local community members by equipping them with upgraded skills in their environmental understanding and enabling them to better implement school and village environmental projects and initiatives. This project will assist in addressing the critical teaching skills shortage in environmental education in South Africa.
