Volunteers work with Manyara Secondary School Eco-Club

Doctor Tipay, CITW & Community Project Co-ordinator for Wilderness Tanzania, recently hosted volunteers, Beverly and Steven, who spent a week in Karatu and Mto wa Mbu with Children in the Wilderness. Their experience was nothing short of transformative. From the moment they arrived, they were embraced by the warmth and curiosity of the local community, bridging cultures, religions, and traditions in ways they never imagine.

Their days were filled with joy and laughter as they engaged with the vibrant children of the Eco-Club. Together, they baked challah, work on setting up the cco vegetable garden, shared stories of their heritage, and marvelled at the dreams these young minds hold – dreams as big and bold as those of teenagers anywhere, from future doctors and lawyers to environmental protectors.

As volunteers, Beverly and Steven learned as much as they taught, if not more, the connections they forged with the children, teachers, and the broader community transcended any barriers, reminding them that the most beautiful things in life are felt with the heart.

Reflecting on their time, Beverly and Steven said, “This week was a journey of unexpected encounters, deep conversations, and shared experiences that will stay with us forever. It truly does take a village to raise a child, and we are so grateful to have been part of this incredible village, if only for a short time”.
