In rural Zimbabwe, a meal at school is never guaranteed. Food insecurity in the surrounding community means many parents simply cannot send their children to school with food on a daily basis, and hunger makes it that much harder for a child to concentrate, take part in class, or even stay in school at all.
Thanks to a generous OAT traveller and the continued partnership of the Grand Circle Foundation, CITW Zambezi is proud to share that all 322 students at Ngamo Primary School are now being fed for up to 20 school weeks. Each day, students receive a balanced meal of mealiemeal and sugar beans, topped up with fresh vegetables from the school garden whenever they are available.
When the delivery truck arrived at Ngamo Primary, students and teachers came together to unload the goods themselves, carrying bags of mealiemeal and sugar beans into the store room, side by side. Teachers have already spoken about the difference this will make as the school heads into the colder winter months, when a warm, filling meal matters more than ever.
From here, the Ngamo community will carry the donation forward, preparing and cooking meals, storing food safely, providing firewood for cooking, and supporting the day to day running of the feeding programme. It is this partnership between donor and community that makes a project like this work.
