Gudigwa & Gunotsoga Primary Schools – Growing Healthy Young Minds

CITW Botswana’s Kelly Baitshoki reports from two of our partner schools in the eastern Okavango Delta…

The third term of the Botswana academic year commenced on 4August 2026, and Gudigwa and Gunotsoga primary school Eco-Clubs have proudly shared their impressive harvests and progress from their vegetable gardens. These rewarding gardens continue to demonstrate the value of practical, hands-on environmental education while making a meaningful contribution to the nutritional wellbeing of children participating in our CITW environmental education clubs.

The vegetable garden initiative was established not only as an educational tool to help learners develop practical skills in gardening, environmental conservation, and sustainable food production, but also as a means of improving access to fresh vegetables. This is particularly important for schools located in remote communities, where access to fresh produce can be limited and vegetables are often difficult to source.

The successful harvests are a significant achievement for the Eco-Clubs, reflecting the commitment and dedication of the learners, Eco-Club co-ordinators and the wider school communities.

The initiative continues to reinforce the importance of sustainable gardening as a practical response to food insecurity while equipping learners with skills that can be applied within their homes and communities.
