Selecting new Eco-Club members for CITW Rwanda

The start of the school year in Rwanda means that our Children in the Wilderness (CITW) Eco-Clubs started as well. For this school year, we have a total of eight Eco-Clubs hosting 30 learners each at four primary schools: Gisunzu Primary School close to Gishwati, Bisate Primary School in Bisate village, Rushubi Primary School situated close to Sabyinyo, and Akayange Primary School just outside Akagera National Park (where Magashi is located).

The CITW Eco-Clubs comprise learners from P4 to P6, or fourth to sixth grade of primary school. The learners from P6 during the last school year have now moved on to secondary school, where they can join our CITW Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES) Programme – environmental clubs for these more advanced students.

Meanwhile, with the P6 students moving on, spaces have opened up in our Eco-Clubs to enrol new learners from P4.

And while a few places were open in each group, depending on the number of P6 students who had left the CITW Eco-Club, hundreds of P4 learners were eager to join the Eco-Clubs, as it is the most popular in the schools.

Therefore, Aline and Damascene, together with the teachers, organised a small test to find out which children showed the most passion for learning more about the environment. At each school many children did the test, but Bisate Primary School is the record holder with 307 learners from P4 wanting to join the Eco-Club!

Obviously, it was not easy to finalise the selection, but Aline and Damascene did manage to make a fair decision on which new learners could join the clubs. The children who did not make it have been put on a waiting list in case there is a chance to join later.

We wish all the students a successful 2024-25 school year!
