Leonard Harerimana, SACOLA & Sabyinyo Communications Officer reports on an inspiring Umuganda held in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park surrounds.
On 25 September 2026, Wilderness Sabyinyo and SACOLA (Sabyinyo Community Livelihood Association) came together for a joint Umuganda (community service) at the foot of Mount Sabyinyo, bringing together 46 participants for a day of conservation, teamwork, and community connection.

876 indigenous trees and shrubs planted
Participants planted a variety of native species, including Hagenia abyssinica, Prunus africana, Podocarpus, and Dombeya torrida, contributing to habitat restoration and the protection of the surrounding ecosystem.

Water sources protected
The team also repaired and strengthened the timber fence protecting the lodge’s water sources, helping safeguard them from buffalo and cattle, while preserving the cleanliness and integrity of this important resource.

Stronger together
Beyond the conservation work, the day was a wonderful opportunity to strengthen friendship, collaboration, and a shared sense of community between Wilderness Sabyinyo and SACOLA. The day concluded with a relaxed barbecue lunch and drinks – a well-deserved celebration of what we achieved together!
A big thank you to everyone who took part. Together, we continue to show that conservation is stronger when we work as one community.
