The CITW Zambezi Team is excited to share an inspiring update on three impactful projects that are making a difference in rural Zimbabwe. Thanks to the generous support from Grand Circle Foundation, Lukosi Secondary School, and St Mary’s and Ngamo primary schools have embarked on a journey to create greener and healthier school environments. Together with their environmental clubs and the enthusiastic participation of Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) guests, each school successfully planted 50 fruit and indigenous trees, amounting to an incredible total of 150 trees across all three sites.
In rural settings such as these, the challenge of protecting young trees from small livestock like goats is significant. To overcome this, we implemented an innovative and sustainable solution: durable, reusable tree guards made of strong metal and wire mesh. These tree guards ensure the survival of the newly planted trees and, being designed for long-term use, will continue to provide protection for years to come.
In addition to the tree planting, Ngamo Primary School has become home to a thriving tree nursery. Managed by the school and its environmental club, the nursery is already cultivating 50 additional saplings. These saplings will soon be planted at the three schools and shared with other schools and communities, extending the impact of this project even further. The nursery is set to serve as a sustainable hub, providing resources, knowledge, and inspiration to future generations, empowering students and communities as a whole to take ownership of their environment.
