CITW Namibia Arbour Day Celebration

Growing a Greener Future: Arbour Day 2026 at Otjinungua Primary School

In early September, the Children in the Wilderness Namibia (CITW) Eco-Club learners at Otjinungua Primary School on the Kunene Region’s Marienfluss Conservancy (where Wilderness Serra Cafema is situated), celebrated Arbour Day by planting, cleaning their Eco-Garden, and harvesting fresh produce from their garden. The learners and teachers also planted 100 papayas trees as part of the school’s project.

Arbour Day is dedicated to planting and caring for trees. Trees play an important role in our environment by providing shade, producing oxygen, supporting wildlife, preventing soil erosion, and helping keep our planet healthy. Celebrating Arbour Day reminds us that even small actions, such as planting a tree or caring for a garden, can make a big difference.

This CITW Arbour Day celebration was also an opportunity for the Eco-Club learners to put environmental responsibility into practice. Planting and maintaining their Eco-Garden is a practical way to emphasise the importance of caring for nature, conserving resources, and protecting the environment for future generations.

The Eco Garden at Otjinungua Primary School serves as an outdoor classroom where learners gain practical knowledge about gardening, plant growth, nutrition, food security, and sustainable living. By planting and harvesting their own produce, learners can better understand where food comes from, the value of healthy eating, and how gardens can contribute to community well-being.

Beyond growing plants, our CITW programme encourages teamwork, patience, and responsibility. Every seed planted and every harvest gathered reminds the children that caring for the environment takes commitment, and that small efforts can grow into something meaningful.

Through their weekly Eco-Club lessons, learners continue to be empowered to become young environmental stewards who understand the importance of protecting Namibia’s natural heritage.
