Yesterday, 27 April 2026 was World Hyena Day, and CITW Kenya took the opportunity for our Eco-Clubs to learn more about these enigmatic predators.
There are four species of hyena in the family Hyaenidae; the spotted, hyena, striped hyena, aardwolf, and brown hyena, all of which, other than the brown hyena, are found within Kenya. The most numerous of the species is the spotted hyena.

Eco-Mentors guided learners through a discussion about hyenas, the four different species, their characteristics, and the important role they play as both hunters and scavengers. One of their most important roles is to help prevent the spread of disease by consuming animal carcasses.
The session ended with an artwork activity. This helped learners better understand hyenas’ key characteristics, distinguish between the species, and deepen their understanding of hyenas and their importance in ecosystems.
