The Eco-Club at Shashe Primary School, Wilderness Botswana’s Children in the Wilderness (CITW) partner school in Maun, celebrated the World Environmental Day by discussing the topic of trees.
The world’s ecosystems are under threat, with unsustainable patterns of manufacturing and consumption reducing nature and causing biodiversity loss over the years, due to pollution and waste, and climate change.
With this year’s theme of ‘Land Restoration, Desertification & Drought Resilience’ in mind, Shashe Primary School, together with the CITW Botswana team, invited Wilderness Guide Trainer, Mr Onamile Lekgopho, to educate the Eco-Club members on the importance of trees in the environment.
Understanding the role trees play was the main topic of the day, as Onamile unfolded his lesson, which covered:
- The names of the trees found at Shashe Primary School
- The importance of trees to humans, animals and the environment
- How to care for trees and the environment
Given their motto ‘Respect yourself, respect each other, respect your environment’, the Eco-Club members were excited as they could strongly relate the topic of the day with this statement.
At the end of the activity, Onamile involved the Eco-Club members in a tree identification and labelling activity around the school grounds.
The CITW Botswana team greatly appreciates the input and impact that Mr Onamile Lekgopho had on our Eco-Club members. This knowledge is for life. Special gratitude is also directed to the school’s management for the support they always give us.
