Chickens for Ziga Primary School, Zimbabwe, April 2015

In February CITW was able to successfully deliver 24 ‘point of lay’ hens to Ziga Primary School as part of the ongoing Grand Circle Foundation (GCF) Poultry Project.

They are due one more vaccine on the 1st April, so the delivery included the vaccine as well as start-up food for the hens – the vaccine needs to be kept cold until administration so although the school does not have its’ own refrigerator, they were able to make a plan to store them at nearby tuck-shops or stores in the village.

The CITW Field Coordinator was required to travel from Hwange to Bulawayo to collect the orders from our Supplier, and then back to Tsholotsho on the overnight train where he was met by school and community members who offloaded the goods onto ox and donkey carts for the remainder of the journey by road to the School.  The hens were 19 weeks old, so are laying eggs now, which is fantastic as the school will be able to start enjoying the benefits of supplementing their nutrition programme as well as income generation for the school from sales virtually immediately.
