Earlier this year, Chidobe Primary School’s kitchen was fully renovated with a new roof, a serving counter, an outdoor cooking area and a handwashing sink. It was a big step forward for the school feeding programme – but one problem remained. The school had nowhere to store its food. Supplies at Chidobe are often hard to come by and can run short for weeks at a time, so every bag of maize meal counts. Until now, deliveries were kept wherever space could be found, exposed to weather, dust and pests, and losing even a small amount could mean learners going without.

Thanks to the continued support of the Grand Circle Foundation (GCF), CITW Zambezi is proud to share that a dedicated storeroom has now been built alongside the kitchen. The neat, solid building is finished inside so it is easy to keep clean, with windows for fresh air and light. Food and kitchen equipment can now be kept safe and dry, stock can be checked and planned for, and every delivery can go further. For the community cook who volunteers her time each school day, it means her supplies are organised and ready when she needs them.

The school community helped wherever they could during the build, and it is the community who will look after the storeroom going forward. The project benefits all 262 students and 13 teachers at Chidobe.

On behalf of the students, teachers and wider Chidobe community, CITW Zambezi thanks GCF for helping finish what the kitchen renovation started. A good meal starts long before it reaches the plate!
