From CITW Camper to Changemaker: Sharon Tjihonge’s Inspiring Journey

CITW BOTSWANA | WHERE ARE THEY NOW

NAME: SHARON TJIHONGE

CITW SCHOOL: SHASHE PRIMARY SCHOOL

YEAR OF CITW CAMP: 2017

My name is Sharon Tjihonge, and I attended Shashe Primary School in Maun, where I became a member of the Children in the Wilderness (CITW) programme. I joined the Environmental Eco-Club when I was 9 years old, and it opened a whole new world for me.

Being part of the CITW programme is honestly one of the most memorable experiences of my childhood. At such a young age, being exposed to the wilderness and the tourism environment was both exciting and eye-opening. On my CITW camp in the Okavango Delta, I remember how much I enjoyed the game drives, evening games and learning about different animals and birds; understanding how they live, adapt and interact with their environment was truly fascinating. It made me appreciate nature in a way I hadn’t before.

Beyond the learning, the experience was also very personal and meaningful. I made new friends, connected with different people, and for a moment it felt like a peaceful escape from everyday life.

Looking back now, I can confidently say it played a big role in shaping how I see the environment and its importance. I’m really grateful I had that opportunity.

Where I Am Now

I am now 19, and a student at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) studying Engineering. Looking back, I can confidently say that my experiences with CITW played a formative role in shaping my curiosity, awareness and appreciation for the environment. To the youngsters who will go through the programme, I would say, live in the moment and take in every experience. Enjoy the learning, the friendships and the time you spend around nature. It may feel like just a camp at the time, but it has a lasting impact. It shapes how you see the world and can influence the person you become. Stay curious, ask questions and appreciate the beauty around you.
