CITW Rwanda Supports Construction of New Volleyball Court for Akayange Primary School

Thanks to generous guest donations, Wilderness and Children in the Wilderness (CITW) Rwanda are proud to have supported Akayange Primary School with the construction of a volleyball court.

Wilderness and CITW’s partnership with the school was forged in 2019, after the opening of Wilderness Magashi in Akagera National Park. Akayange is the closest school to the north gate of the national park, and our camp. Through this excellent relationship, we are delighted to have facilitated the implementation of numerous projects at the school, including CITW’s environmental education and life-skills programme, and the Eco-Club members enthusiastically attend weekly get-togethers to learn more about the protection and conservation of the environment.

The new volleyball court is an opportunity for the 416 students and 13 teachers (including the administration staff) to relax, have fun and enjoy inter-class and inter-school volleyball competitions. What’s more, the Akayange community can now use it over the weekends when the students are not in class.

The cost of the new court amounts to USD 2,800 – this includes the installation, and all necessary materials, which were purchased from the local community, as well as the community support in the form of hiring local contractors.

Eric Mugiraneza, Akayange’s Headmaster expressed his gratitude: “On behalf of Akayange Primary School, we really thank Wilderness and CITW for all of the projects that have been received at Akayange Primary school since in 2019. The school makes a very big difference to the students; also, there is a lot of improvement in, for example, their performance in the national exams for P6 students. This volleyball playground will continue to change lives for us by enhancing everyone’s physical fitness as well as teamwork – and the enjoyment of a fun and social activity“.
