World Elephant Day is celebrated annually on the 12th of August to raise awareness about the protection and preservation of elephants.

This year’s theme is Matriarchs & Memories of Elephants, as the memory of the matriarch is crucial for the herd’s survival. Elephants are known to be some of the planet’s most intelligent animals, and they possess remarkable memories, especially the matriarchs, who retain phenomenal knowledge about locations, routes, and other vital information for a very long period of time. The matriarchs ensure that the knowledge is passed down to the younger generations, for the herd’s continued survival, and adaptation to changing environments.

This year our Eco-Club at Otjetjekua Primary School engaged students in a creative celebration by having them draw their best images of elephants. The children also had the opportunity to learn about the life cycle of the elephant, and were educated on the important role these amazing animals play in our environment.

This initiative highlighted the importance of protecting elephants, and created more awareness about their important status in our conservation efforts.
