Children In The Wilderness (Zimbabwe & Zambia) collaborated with teacher education staff and students at the University of Newcastle, Australia to conduct a two-week study tour for Australian students to Victoria Falls in September/October this year. The seven teacher education students visited schools in the area, ran a resource-making workshop with local teachers and collaborated with teachers at Jabulani School to undertake various teaching activities with the children, including book-making, maths games, and studying for the Grade 7 exams. The Jabulani School children also had great fun teaching the Australian visitors IsiNdebele! The Australian students had a fabulous time in Victoria Falls; working with teachers and children and enjoying the wonderful Zimbabwean hospitality.
Back home in Australia these students continue to reflect on their life changing Victoria Falls experience and will take their intercultural learnings into their teaching careers. We hope this is a lasting relationship between the University of Newcastle and CITW Zambezi, one that expands into Australian schools as the students begin their own teaching careers.
