Zambezi Region School Rubbish Collection

With the Eco-Clubs off to a great start in Term 2 here in the Zambezi Region, we also wanted to ensure that students are mindful of keeping their environment litter-free. As the term began, we asked all teachers to undertake litter collection within and around their schools. Eco-Mentors took charge of this with much enthusiasm, sending photos of Eco-Club members picking up litter. For many schools this has now become a weekly to fortnightly activity, with Mentors continually sending photos of students and teachers on litter collection rounds.

While rubbish collection is important, we continue to stress to Mentors the importance of educating children on not dropping litter in the first place. This is slowly starting to take effect, as we can see the difference when visiting schools, particularly those in rural areas.

We are so happy to see Mentors taking initiative every week and hope that over time the message of not littering will get around to the whole school and wider community, and litter collections can become a thing of the past.
