Over the last several years, Wilderness Rwanda and CITW have supported the students of Gisunzu Primary School, as many of them are from historically marginalised families. The children who do not receive this vital assistance tend to fall behind in their classes, due to the lack of necessary school supplies. Now, with our support, there has been a noticeable increase in students who would otherwise have dropped out and no longer attend class.

Thanks to some USD 4,000.00 in donations received from our Wilderness guests recently, we were able to support Gisunzu Nursery and Primary schools with all the supplies necessary to ensure a successful start to their new school year this September.

The funds were sufficient to provide chairs, uniforms, shoes, school bags, notebooks and other school materials for 72 of the smallest students in the nursery school, and for 106 learners in the primary school.
What’s more, the community committee employed several co-operatives from the Gishwati area to supply the materials: local carpenters made the chairs, and a local sewing co-operative made all the uniforms. In this way, the contribution went far beyond supporting just the school and the children, with multiple people in the surrounding community benefiting through this employment and empowerment.

The uniforms and school materials were distributed by Aline Umutoni, CITW & Community Manager, to the many happy children and the school leaders in the week of the 25th of September, the start of the new school year for 2023-24 in Rwanda.
