January 2020 – Children in the Wilderness (CITW) recently announced that the 2018 Nedbank Tour de Tuli promotional video has won the Best South African Film in Sports Tourism category at the International Tourism Film Festival Africa awards.
“We are delighted to have won this award at the first International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA), and to see that our message of conservation and community has reached more people than ever before,” comments Tour Director, Nicola Harris. “The combination of pristine African scenery, smiling faces (on both riders and local community members alike) and wildlife makes for a compelling visual narrative. The video captures the essence of the Tour in just 217 seconds,” she adds.
2020 will see the 15th edition of the Nedbank Tour de Tuli traverse protected wilderness areas in Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Tour is not a race; rather, it’s an opportunity to ride for a purpose. That purpose is to raise funds and awareness for CITW. The International Jury at the ITFFA 2019 felt that the 2018 Tour de Tuli video perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the Tour and would be an effective means of encouraging more people to participate in the Tour.
Over the last 14 years, the Tour has hosted some 3 900 cyclists and raised more than R25 million for Children in the Wilderness. The Nedbank Tour de Tuli has earned a reputation as an exceptional wilderness experience. It has attracted a devoted following among adventurous MTB riders both in southern Africa and beyond. Each year, a number of international riders travel to southern Africa to experience the incredible scenery, camaraderie and warm hospitality, making the Tour a truly global sports tourism event.
The award-winning 2018 video contains evocative sequences of wildlife and scenery, with human interest provided by footage taken amongst local communities and interviews with Tour riders.
