Since the start of the school year in October 2021, Bisate Primary School has been providing meals to all of the 1 500 learners enrolled at the school.
An initiative from the Rwandan government to motivate learners to attend school and not skip any school days, the feeding programme has proved to be a big success. “On an empty stomach you cannot learn,” says Headmistress Dancille Mukakamari, and she is convinced that the feeding programme will also improve the students’ results.
The cost of feeding the children is covered by the parents who pay a contribution of RWF 4 000 (around USD 4) per month for their child.
Dancille and our Bisate Community Committee requested that Children in the Wilderness and Wilderness Safaris assist those students coming from disadvantaged families who can’t afford the monthly contribution. The community committee provided a list of 86 students, confirmed by the Kinigi Sector leaders.
Thanks to generous donations from our Bisate guests, we are fortunate to be able to support this initiative, ensuring that the 86 learners do not miss school, and can benefit from a nutritious daily meal.
In January 2022 the second school term of this school year started, and we ensured that the food allowance for the term was allocated. With a contribution of more than USD 3 000 for the full school year, all learners at Bisate Primary School can enjoy their healthy meals and nobody has to feel left out.
