Rwanda Children in the Wilderness (CITW) Regional Coordinators Aline Umutoni and Ingrid Baas visited Akayange Primary School situated just outside Akagera National Park’s North Gate in late September. From Wilderness Safaris Magashi Camp, this is the first school guests see when travelling outside the Park.
After a meeting with Headmaster Emmanuel Kanyarutoki, everyone agreed that CITW and the school would work together to run CITW Eco-Clubs at the school.
Currently, the school is running environmental clubs with a total of 100 learners, but they struggle to obtain lesson material. The upcoming Eco-Mentor training in October will hopefully make a big difference to the teachers!
All 240 children at the school greeted Aline and Ingrid with a warm and enthusiastic welcome. They performed songs, and a sketch on the importance of education and awareness in the local community to stop illegal activities in the Park.
