Word Works Literacy Training with Children in the Wilderness Zambezi

In an effort to improve literacy in the Zambezi region, Children in the Wilderness has partnered with South African based Non-Profit Organisation, Word Works.  Twenty – six Grade 0-2 teachers from Zimbabwe and Zambia attended a five-day training workshop, with the aim of learning a Word Works devised foundation programme to better literacy.

Word Works established the Strengthening Early Literacy and Language Teaching in Grade R (STELLAR) program to deploy a cost-effective, resource-rich methodology for supporting literacy in Grade 0 to 2 classrooms. For teachers of these year groups, literacy is particularly difficult to teach without adequate resources.

“The development of the country, or world is how the children’s backgrounds are prepared. Word Works is the bedrock to future think tanks’’, said Patricia Bunjuri of Kings Primary School in Victoria Falls, and a participant in the training workshop.

Seven of the twelve participating Zambian schools were represented at the workshop, while ten of the fourteen Zimbabwean schools sent representatives.
