Botswana guide Ollie Porote volunteered at this year’s Vumbura Plains Eco-Club camp.
I was at Vumbura Plains at the beginning of December to help share our interpretation of nature with local Eco-Club schoolchildren. Vumbura Plains North guides and I presented interesting and instructive lessons on the formation of the Okavango Delta formation and its biomes.
Also in attendance this year were chiefs from Seronga and other nearby communities, including Beetsha and Gudigwa villages, the idea being to teach the children about their Bayei, Mbukushu and Bushman heritage.
Other Bushmen cultural activities were also shared, and the teachers and mentors did a good job; their interaction with, and care for the children, was very impressive.
The camp was great fun and provided priceless exposure for some first-time campers participating in the programme.
