Wanting To Make a Difference

March 2007 – Four intrepid guides aim to paddle the length of the Okavango, from its source in the Benguela Plateau in the highlands of Angola, across Namibia and into Botswana where it becomes the world-famous Okavango Delta, ending at Maun, a town on the edges of the Delta. Members of the paddling team, Rod Wilson, Clinton Edwards, Brian Gibson and Mark Hill, all have a keen sense of adventure and have undertaken this to raise funds for Children in the Wilderness Botswana.

The expedition will be taken in four single “Tsunami 165” sea kayaks from the US, which are capable of running rapids and have a carrying capacity required for a trip of this nature. The team will be carrying everything needed for the entire expedition in the kayaks: food, medical supplies, sleeping equipment, SAT phones, photo/filming equipment, fishing tackle etc. The aim is to paddle the entire length of the river unassisted, with no backup, unless some emergency occurs.

The expedition will cover three aspects: Firstly the road trip up from Maun to Angola, a journey of 2500km which, especially once entering Angola, will have to deal with very uncertain road conditions after the civil war and recent flooding in the area. Secondly, the story will cover the canoeing aspect of paddling a completely unexplored river. “We will illustrate the challenge, both physically and mentally, of paddling almost 2000 kilometres through a remote and potentially dangerous area. Of particular interest is the group dynamics that will develop amongst four friends who face a real test of strength and stamina.” The final aspect will be looking at the environmental health of the river and its surroundings. The group aims to focus on how the effects of proposed hydroelectric schemes, agriculture, tapping of water and mining may prove to be detrimental to the fragile ecosystem of the Okavango Delta. Finally, articles and video footage will be combined to produce a documentary that will be able to offer others a glimpse into this pristine area of Africa and show how fragile it is.

The expedition is in its final stages and the group are looking for a select group of sponsors who can assist them with covering their costs, so as to be able to accomplish what is potentially a very exciting and enlightening journey. Sponsors’ logos and other options of credit for contributors are welcome.
