2008 Tour de Kruger - Tuli to Pafuri Route

The ‘Tour de Kruger -Tuli to Pafuri’ cycle tour is a five day/5 night mountain bike ride travelling through the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, Mapungubwe and through the Makuleke / Pafuri region of northern Kruger National Park. This route is an exclusive for this tour and will be the only time that cyclists will be able to ride this route.

The 2008 cycle tour will start in the The Northern Tuli Game Reserve and end in the Pafuri region of  Kruger National Park, approximately 350km later.

We will ride through the beautiful Northern Tuli Game Reserve on ancient elephant paths which now   serve as single track. The terrain varies from undulating savanna to rocky outcrops, and wooded   floodplains with a few technical stages and some good wildlife habitat. We cross the Shashe/Limpopo River floodplain into the Mapungubwe National Park, a World Heritage Site of enormous cultural  significance to the indigenous people of Southern Africa. We will cycle through this beautiful National Park  predominantly on graded roads. We follow the Limpopo all the way to Sigonde and take the back roads through some local villages to Pafuri.  The last day will be spent cycling through the Pafuri concession.

We get the cyclists up early each morning, have breakfast and will be on the road at around sunrise so that the cycling can be enjoyed during the cool of the early mornings. All riders should reach the overnight camp from lunch time to late afternoon.

We will be dividing the  cyclists into smaller groups of around 20 cyclists of similar riding abilities.  We will have back up support vehicles to assist the cyclists throughout the tour, however as much of the cycling will be done on single track, the vehicles will not necessarily be able to follow the cyclists at all times, but will meet up with them at pre-determined spots. These vehicles will be stocked with spares, water, drinks and food (and for the collection of all the trash that cyclists accumulate during the day). It is
important that the groups ride closely together in areas of high wildlife concentrations. In areas where   we travel through remote villages etc we will be less strict on staying in bunches so long as the cyclists are riding with another cyclist. It is important that no rider should be left on his/her own.

There will be a sweeper vehicle to pick up anyone who can't make it on a particular day or who needs   help to get through a stage. There will also be a bicycle mechanic and spares to help with repairs.   A medical team will also be on standby to assist with any medical emergencies or injuries.

This cycle tour is strenuous. Although there is plenty of back up and support (for weary cyclists) anyone that considers entering, should take consideration of the following recommendations to ensure a more enjoyable cycle tour:

  • Must be in good, physical condition. This  doesn't just mean just generally fit, you also need to have spent some  time on a mountain bike!

  • As far as a training schedule goes,  we would suggest a couple of weeks of cycling, building up to at least  6-8hrs of riding a week over 6-8weeks.

  • A resting heart rate of around 60bpms at least.

  • A good quality mountain bike is recommended. If  your bike is custom built with specific specs, please ensure that you  have necessary consumables and parts, as we cannot guarantee having all  parts available along this very remote route.

  • It will also help to ensure that your  bike size and set up are correct.

  • The ability to do a continuous ride  of a minimum of 3-4hrs

  • Doing an off-road cycle ride at least once  a week, so that you can master technical skills

  • Experiment with energy drinks to ensure that you  find one that you know works for you and that you can use on the  tour.

Over and above the above mentioned the following are compulsory :
Any potential cyclists need to have the initiative to raise at least the minimum fundraising donation, a great sense of adventure and a good sense of humour.

WEDNESDAY 06 AUGUST 2008:  Approximately 70 km

An early start on the first morning. Today we will cycle through the Northern Tuli Reserve.

In the remote eastern corner of Botswana, at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, lies an area known historically as the Tuli enclave - a diverse wilderness of savannah, riverine forests, marshland, open plains and sandstone outcrops. This reserve is home of no less than seven of Africa's giants: the African elephant, the lion, giraffe, the baobab tree, the eland, the ostrich, and the kori bustard. It is fitting therefore, that some 175 000 acres / 72,000 hectares of pristine game land,be set aside for these unique, prodigious features of this exhilarating continent. A fitting start to a great mountain bike event.

The day will be spent traversing this Park, a great opportunity to enjoy the landscape and hopefully get some good wildlife sightings. Due to the high abundance of wildlife on this Reserve, we need to exercise caution when cycling on this day and cyclists will be expected to cycle within their groups. Armed cycling guides will lead and follow each group and ensure that groups stay together. Most of the cycling on this day will be on single track.

In the afternoon, we will cross the Shashe/Limpopo River floodplain separating Botswana and South Africa  into the Mapungubwe National Park. At the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers, three countries unite: Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe .This region is one of great diversity, where besides the rich cultural heritage of the area,
most of the continent's big game roam. There is also an incredible variety of plant and animal life

Our second nights camp site will be at the Mapungubwe picnic site with spectacular views overlooking the confluence of these two mighty rivers.

THURSDAY 07 AUGUST 2008: Approximately 145km

One thousand years ago, Mapungubwe in Limpopo province was the centre of the largest kingdom in the subcontinent, where a highly sophisticated people traded gold and ivory with China, India and Egypt.  It has now been declared a World Heritage Site. Sandstone formations, mopane woodlands and unique riverine forest and baobab trees form the astounding scenic backdrop for a rich variety of animal life. Elephant, giraffe, white rhino, eland, gemsbok and numerous other antelope species occur naturally in the area.

Today we will cycle through Mapungubwe. This National Park is a hidden jewel and will offer good game viewing opportunities as well as great scenery with “moon landscapes” of sandstone formations.

After cycling through the Park we will follow the route of the Limpopo River. This area incorporates endless expanses of undulating indigenous bush characterised by the remarkable form of the baobab and a profusion of birds.

Tonight's camp will be located at a camp site near Sigonde

FRIDAY 08 AUGUST 2008: Approximately 70 km

Today's cycling will be very exciting. We will travel dirt roads and single track through some local villages all the way into Pafuri

Overnight at a mobile tented camp in the Pafuri Reserve

SATURDAY 09 AUGUST 2008 :
ROUTE 1 - Approximately 50km,
ROUTE 2 - Approximately 70km

Our last day will be spent enjoying cycling in the Pafuri Reserve. The route is flat without too many hills, great mountain biking Jeep track. The Pafuri Reserve is situated between the Limpopo and the Luvuvhu Rivers in the northern sector of the Kruger National Park, in a 24 000-hectare area called the Pafuri or the Makuleke. This area is the ancestral home of the Makuleke people and is one of the most diverse and scenically attractive areas in the Kruger National Park.

This area is certainly the wildest and most remote part of the Park and offers varied vegetation, great game viewing, the best birding in all of the Kruger, and is filled with folklore of the early explorers and ancient civilisations. It is well known for its fever tree forests. The region is considered one of Kruger's biodiversity hotspots, with some of the largest herds of elephant and buffalo, leopard and lion and incredibly prolific birdlife. In May 2007 the biological significance of the area was recognised in its declaration as a Ramsar site - a wetland of international importance.

SUNDAY 10 AUGUST

ACCOMMODATION and MEALS:
